    Description

Lactose intolerance does not mean that you are allergic to milk, but that you feel sick after you drink milk, or eat cheese, icecream or anything else that contains lactose.

Many people suffer from lactose intolerance, in the majority of cases undiagnosed and consequently untreated. Also, many infants suffer from lactose intolerance characterized by cramps, diarrhea, vomiting.

Lactose is a large carbohydrate formed out of two smaller carbohydrates, glucose and galactose. So that lactose can be absorbed from the intestines in the body, it first has to be desintegrated in glucose and galactose. Glucose and galactose are then absorbed by the cells which coat the small intestine. The enzyme which desintegrates lactose in glucose and galactose is called lactase and is found on the surface of the cells which coat small intestine. Lactose intolerance is caused by the reduction or the absence of the activity of the lactase, which prevents lactose desintegration.

The people who have lactose intolerance have difficulties in digesting lactose, a type of sugar from milk and other diary products.

Food products which can contain lactose include:

    • Milk and dairy products including ice cream
    • Bread and other pastry products
    • Processed cereals for breakfast
    • Instant fries, soups and beverages
    • Margarine
    • Cooked meat
    • Salad dressings
    • Candy and other snacks
    • Biscuits and cakes

The signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance usually start 30 minutes up to two hours after the consumption of foods that contain lactose.

The usual signs and symptoms are:

    • Nausea
    • Abdominal cramps
    • Bloating
    • Gas

The symptoms are usually mild but they can sometimes be severe. The severity of the symptoms does not seem to be correlated with the degree of malabsorbtion of lactose, but by the body’s response depending on the case.
