Description

What is Vitamin B2?

Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is a water-soluble vitamin, being an important factor in maintaining health, functioning as a coenzyme in energy metabolism. Because riboflavin is not stored in the body, it should be added daily to the diet, either through food or dietary supplements.

Signs and symptoms of riboflavin deficiency (known in the Anglo-Saxon medical literature as ariboflavinosis) include: skin disorders, hyperemia (pathological influx of a certain amount of blood to a certain part of the body) and edema of the mouth and throat, angular stomatitis (lesions in the corners of the mouth), cheilosis (swelling, chapped lips), hair loss, problems in the reproductive process, sore throat, itching and redness of the eyes, problems of liver and nervous system degeneration. People with riboflavin deficiency usually have deficiencies in other nutrients, so some of these symptoms may reflect other health problems.

Severe riboflavin deficiency can affect the metabolism of other nutrients, especially other B vitamins, through decreased levels of specific coenzymes (riboflavin normally forms two coenzymes: FMN (flavin-mononucleotide) and FAD (flavin-adenine dinucleotide).

Anemia and cataracts may develop if the riboflavin deficiency is severe and prolonged.
